[Typo3-install] can't create/select Database

Hi list

I'm a typo3 newbie installing on lunarpages with cPanel  in the US. Using typo3 Install Tool, I do connect successfully to mysql but I cannot select a database within mysql. I have tried the following all unsuccesfully:

1) Create a new database from within typo3 install tool (both 1-2-3 and manual) but I get an error message saying can't create database. 
2) Created a database manually/directly from cPanel mySql tool. But it's name does not show up in the database list in typo3 Install Tool.  
3) Edited localconf.php (last entry) with $typo_db = 'database_name' with the name of the database I manually created (and which I can sucessfully view in phpMyAdmin) but get error message saying "can't connect to database 'database_name'" where the name is the correct name, including case, of the database I created and which I know exsts,
