Yes that's my problem, but deleting the temp_CACHED_* didn't help.

I am still worried about if there is more encryption than joh316 -> md5
What if salt is used or can that not be done?
The problem is that I am not the one who installed the TYPO3 in the first place, so crack the password where I can find them. 
I have full access to the TYPO3 files and also full access to the database.
If that helps...
