It seems that there is once again a breaking change in ImageMagick in
some minor version. This has been the case throughout the history of IM,
leading to obscure settings in the TYPO3 Install Tool (disabling
effects, inverting mask, inverting inverting mask settings, etc.).
With dropping support of IM 5 and older we hoped to get rid of these
things too. It seems that IM has yet found a way to confuse developers
and users.

Even between IM developers there is no agreement about this change [1].

I'll have to investigate later versions to see if more things were
changed (reverting this behaviour?).

Have you tried GraphicsMagick? Over the years it has been more stable
regarding these sudden changes and on most systems it uses less
resources (CPU, memory). Many hosting providers offer both IM and GM.

Have you already filed a bug report in TYPO3 forge for this? If not,
please do so.
