Okay, first of all the static template issue was about another extension as Jigal noted.

But the login not working issue was because of the favicon error! I hadn't inserted the favicon file yet although I had in ts setup:
page.shortcutIcon = fileadmin/template/img/favicon.ico

This resulted the login not working. Either deleting the ts or uploading the favicon.ico file solved the problem.
