Sorry for my late answer. Yes you can use purely the FCE feature of 
flux/fed. This is how I prepare all my current projects:

fluidtemplate + backend_layout for frontend rendering
flux + fed for FCE building.

Just simply check only the FCE feature at the extension variables and 
you are ready to go. I have one simple extension which holds the FCE 
html files, thats it.
