Xatu,

The "memory exhausted" error is actually triggered when your server is not providing TYPO3 with *enough* memory.  To resolve the issue, have you tried increasing the memory beyond the 128 M original size?  Try something like 258 M, if your shared host will allow something that high.  Also, sometimes the administrators of shared hosts can be picky about how they go about allowing you to increase the PHP memory limit.  It might be worth contacting their tech support to make sure you are making the change correctly.

As to why it worked briefly at the meager 16 M, PHP probably wasn't consuming as much memory as it eventually needed yet, and didn't error until it had exhausted those resources.
