I assume you want some modification to different TYPO3-installations with 
copying one file from installation to installation.

this can be done in this way: 
concentrate all your override-changes in one single typoscript-template 
and export it (t3d).
then you can import it in every installtion and  just need to include it 
in your main-template

if you use a default-configuration for new pages this template can be 
included.
we do something like this in the mastertemplate (http://ug.typo3-nrw.de/
mastertemplate.html) having a default-configuration for every new 
installation.
