It should apply without problem on 4.2 (perhaps even on 4.1). If you use TemplaVoilà, you have to use the TemplaVoilà patch instead (http://bugs.typo3.org/view.php?id=9465).

However I cannot propose this patch for 4.2 nor 4.1 as new features are only allowed for new versions of TYPO3, meaning 4.3. you may do what you want on your local install though...
