[TYPO3] tt_content type "database relation"

I'd like to have a plug in select a database relation and store that in the
tt_content field appropriate to that plug in.

Using the "database relation" option I can create a "selectorbox, global"
but it only shows the uids I want to pickup (and store), can I trick this
into showing something more useful on screen whilst still storing those uids
