[TYPO3] Trade ecommerce categories arent selectable in product

in trade ecommerce extension (key: trade) I cant seem to assign a 
category for a product....

i am running typo3 4.0, and have installed trade extension 0.1.1 
(http://typo3.org/extensions/repository/view/trade/0.1.1/)

have placed the plugin on a page

created 2 product records, 2 category records. in the product records 
there is a dropdown choice for category, but it has no choices. i'm 
wondering how the categories ive created get to that list...... and if i 
hit the frontend, there are no choices for category in the generated page...

in the manual i dont see anything that explains how categories are 
assigned? i wonder if i need some ts setup to enable category functionality?
