I see no problem with it. Use it if you want ;)

In fact, you may not even need it if you limit PHP in opening files to 
user's directory (see open_basedir in PHP manual) and setup proper 
permissions. File system user is site's owner (rwx), group is Apache's 
(rx or rwx depending on needs), others have no permission to 
read/write/execute. Quote is done by Linux, checking web space - by a 
dedicated process that runs under root or Apache (if you do not like 
root) group. Anything wrong with it?
