[TYPO3] RTE does not translate < to &lt; and > to &gt;

Hi,

yeah subject says it all the RTE produces non-valid XHTML if I enter "<" or 
even "&lt;" - I have to disable the RTE, type the "&lt;" to make it work. If 
I turn it on again, it will just mess up again :(
Any ideas on how to fix this?
