Just have to add the following after find the following in the TSREF

config.uniqueLinkVars has a data type of Boolean where the default is 0

config.linkVars however has a data type of list....

So I have changed setup typoscript as follows:

config.linkVars = L
config.uniqueLinkVars = 1
