[Typo3] Versioning of uploaded files

Hello,

I've noticed that Typo3 appends a number to uploaded files if the file 
is already uploaded. Is this feature used for file versioning for files 
you attach to documents?

Could you then use the * wild card in links to the file to always 
download the latest one?

In the project I'm on we are considering if this feature is sufficient 
or if we have to integrate with Subversion.

How do you normally handle versioning of uploaded files?
