[Typo3] handle <br> in text from DB

the '<br>' are in the text with some characters of the type mentioned
(squares, thick vertical line etc.) I would like to avoid the latter
characters showing at all, but can this be done (some built in
function i PHP or the like)?

The breaks works but yes I should replace them with <br />
