[Typo3] Functions parsed more than needed?

hi there,

i was wondering a while ago and got no reply on this *very* strange 
behaviour of typo3. I have a function inside typo3 (no matter if inside 
an extension or just php in php-extension) - inside the function is a 
simple mail(). so everything is fine, everything gets displayed 
correctly but i get up to three emails when loading the page! Any ideas 
on this? Another thing is 404 handling with realURL - since this is very 
important i would like to know if there is a handy way to implement this ...
