[Typo3] FE User, Adding OK but will NOT login

Hi,

I'm new to typo3, going through lots of tutotials, reading this list
for a while.  Hopefully I can pose this question intelligently.

I'm trying to get the FE login feature to work.  I cannot login at all
(and haven't ever been able to).  I can add a user, (but it doesn't go
to the system folder that I've designated for website users).  But I
CAN'T ever login to a previously created user.  Even immediately after
it's created, it won't login.  I've added the new extensions:
feuser_admin and newadminbox without help (although it did help me
troubleshoot a little).

But... Eventually I'd like to add some of my own fields.  I think I
jumped ahead of myself and went into phpMyAdmin to add a field.  I was
afraid that this might have caused a problem, so I went in the same
way and removed it.  Could this be my problem?  Is there a way to fix
it?
