[Typo3] Why is the imagefield a blob?

Hi list,

while discussing the previous issue with co-workers we were really 
wondering why the database column for images is a BLOB!

Is there perhaps aan option to store the entire image into the database 
instead of just the link? Otherwise we don't really understand why to 
use the BLOB type for storting something like "image.jpg".
