[Typo3] sys_history large

Hi list

I'm still a novice with Typo3 and trying to learn as quickly as possible.  I've noticed in studying phpmyadmin that sys_history is growing quite large.  Is this something I will have to manually monitor?  Can this category be deleted on a regular basis or does it serve some bigger purpose than simply a history log of activity?  Are there other categories that would need to be regularly purged?
