[Typo3] simple gmenu

How can I build a simple GMENU just like the one mentioned as Challenge 
(GMENU/2) on:
http://typo3.org/documentation/document-library/doc_core_tsbyex/Images_on_GMENUs/

One with a left.gif a middle.gif that expands to the size of the text and a 
right.gif.

Is it possible to do that without a wrap, so I could make part of the text 
overlay left.gif and right.gif?
