I've also only made bad experiences using a less extension:

 * The typically use phpless, which leaps behind the original LESS,
and e.g. bootstrap 3 does not compile with them.
 * t3_less has the problem you described (and some more, the extension
implements some parts of parsing itself)
 * amazingless spams typo3temp with files

Best thing is to compile your less and then deploy it. Some task
runner helps to automate that.
