[TYPO3-dev] Creating sys_file_reference's in the frontend?

Hi all,

I'm developing a plugin (Extbase-based, but I'm not sure it matters in 
this case) for TYPO3 6.1. I need to create FAL relations in the 
frontend, which means creating entries in sys_file_reference. As far as 
I can see there's no API for this. Is that right?

Any recommended way to do this in the FE?
