[TYPO3-dev] config.index_externals = 1 don't work

Hello dev team,

in TSref documentation I found following line:

index_externals | boolean | If set, external media linked to on the 
pages is indexed as well.

I think this is very confusing. What is "external media"? For myself 
"external media" are files which are NOT on my own server.

After many tests I found out that activation of index_externals only 
allow caching of LOCAL files. So...what do you meen with "external"?
