this is how I (as a user) would expect it to work.

Please don't forget extension delivered icons such as record icons... all  
overlays could be generated at once and then cached ... TYPO3 always  
assumes that all files are cached and it is up to the admin to trigger the  
regeneration if necessary ... so there should be not performance lost  
whatsoever and it is still very flexible (and automated)
