Yes, this should be quite easy to add additional news items ;-)

Another way would be a more generic solution to process any markers in the  
login template (this would require a copy of the login template with the  
custom marker.. sounds a bit overcomplicated, but it would be a nice way  
to place almost everything anywhere in the login screen).
