Indeed that would be a nice feature. Having a better organised 
upload/pics/ and upload/media/ is a step in a cleaner directory 
structure when not using DAM.

Is there hidden pitfalls if this become (as an optional feature) a way 
to work with images added to tt_content or pages resources?

I mean having this: /upload/pics/23/ for tt_content, id=23 and
/uploads/pics/44 for pages resource, id=44 ?
