100% +1 here. Less configuration, more out-of-the-box :)

I'm cool with creating a patch for this for 4.3 in the next weeks, maybe 
we should postpone this though for the new BE skinning API (I'm sure 
there will be discussions, not about this but about everything else of 
course). Anyways, I'll look into it.

BTW: How would you do the autodetection? Just see if gdlib is compiled 
in PHP?
