I use standard PHP Versions 5.2.1 of Ubuntu and 5.2.0 on Debian. I didn't
run into heavy errors so far. Are you sure the troubles depend on the PHP5
version,if so many versions fail? There may be other reasons, especially
for "syntax error line 1: <!DOCTYPE html \n".

I would check:

* Doctype Spec., 
* utf-8/ascii configurations
* MS-Linebreaks,

...
