There is already a feature request in the bugtracker, calling this
"directorypicker". Please have a look:

Concerning your approach: What if you integrated all images of a folder
to a content element and after that you upload a new image file to that
folder - is the content element updated as well?

The directorypicker would behave as a relation, your approach would be a
snapshot of a directory at a given time. Both different ideas could be
required. Please have a look at the mentioned feature request.
