I always was sure it would only be phpMyAdmin, until I saw broken
characters yesterday with different tools, idependent phpMyadmin and
mySql-Admin. Then I found this open bug in the bugtracker. Panic. Following
your experiences I now tested a completly new setup with all the all the
latest software. 

Indeed, everything seems to work fine so far. At least on the first
glance, hope also on he second.

So bug 1039 is solved and can be closed.
