[TYPO3-dev] Record sorting API function

Hi,

Is there an API function available to sort records in tables? I don't mean
to sort them using ORDER BY in SQL, but to modify the value in the 'sorting'
field of a particular table. I was hoping that there would be a 'move up'
and a 'move down' function, or even perhaps a 'move to top' or 'move to
bottom'.

I did search quite a bit but could not find it.
