I have made the following experience with selects in general. If one doesn't
short the text, but limits the size of the select bei CSS, firefox and I.E.
behave different, if you drop down the list.

I.E. shows the short variant even in the drop down list, but firefox shows the
full length of the entries. Maybe that could be an step forward to a better
solution for the BE.
