I would just like to add that I'm working on a 
completely non-TYPO3 (i.e. no dependency on TYPO3) 
XML-based label system, a bit like the new LLANG. 
To validate I just do

xmllint --dtdvalid elLabel.dtd example.xml

This is too easy to ignore + there are very few 
other "simple" (i.e. easy to learn... etc etc) 
languages that offer validation as simple.
