Maybe a flag in the confVars.
Like "InstallToolUpdateMode = 1".
This way you could control it.
But on the other hand this would be stored in localconf.php thus the 
updateMode would be disabled upon update 2.
So this could go into install/index.php and has to be commented to work.
This way those who know could comment the die call AND comment the 
UpdateMode while most others only comment die die call.
