I have seen that there is a metaphone-hook.

Does it make sense to have either make the hook-function get an (optional) 
language argument (so hast to deal with multiple languages) or to extend the 
hook-API to have language specific metaphone funcions (one for each 
language)?

I have somewhere on my harddisk (Perl) code which resembles metaphone, but 
is for German. Thought it might be a good idea to dig it up.
