On Mac OS X 10.2.6 I installed 5.5.7, too:

- no reading AI, PDF or TGA;
- no reading or scaling PNG, but writing okay;
- first test in combining fails (gif masking inverted), second looks
quite different, but basically seems to work.

Everything else okay.
