Hello Jordan,

well the manual as a whole is correct, because in the followin' lines it
says:

PHP Configuration 
In php.ini you must set 

safe_mode_exec_dir = /usr/local/php/bin

if you use the recommended safe_mode.


so if you do everything step-by-step as described in the manual it will
work out-of-the-box.

To give the people the whole true without confusing too much you couldd
start with the not very obvious hint at the end:

check for your safe_mode_exec_dir in php.ini or set it by yourself with

safe_mode_exec_dir = /usr/local/php/bin
