One more idea:

Please check, if installed:

ii  libmysqlclient 3.23.56-2      LGPL-licensed client library for MySQL
datab
ii  libmysqlclient 4.0.21-7       mysql database client library


Package "php4-mysql" is compiled against mysql api version 3.23 , means
libmysqlclient 3.23.56-2. If this lib isn`t installed, you could have
trouble, because libmysqlclient 4.0.21-7 is not fully backwards supporting
the api calls of mysql 3.23.
