backports are design to fit into distribution dependencies.
mixed distributions could crash your dependencies or ask you to install
the whole bunch of new versions you never have been aware that they
exist anyway :)

if your doing this for testing anyway, why not upgrade the whole machine
to testing/unstable distribution?
if you're not dependend on an "just-running-and-easy-to-manage" system,
this could be your solution.

if you just need to have few versions up to date, backports are your friend.

remember:
at the moment, debian security fixes are limited to woody.
upgrading testing/unstable packages could break your system.
