Hi Bastian,
> Does anybody of you know what's the best deal with mobile internet?
The main 3G networks are Telstra, Vodafone and Optus. All use 2100MHz UMTS
in metro areas. The UMTS frequencies in outer metro and rural areas are
850MHz for the Telstra network and 900MHz for Vodafone and Optus.
Available hardware (dongles, phones, etc.) is either 2100MHz, 850/2100MHz
or 900/2100MHz. Make sure you know which network you'll be using and where
before you buy your hardware. Of course most of the country is not covered
by any network!
For pricing check out these sites:
- telstra.com.au (look under small business) *
- bigpond.com.au (another Telstra brand) *
- vodafone.com.au
- optus.com.au
- virginbroadband.com.au (uses the Optus network)
* The Telstra/Bigpond 3G network is called Next G.

Nominal speeds differ, and actual speeds certainly differ according to
location and cell load. With the right software on your mobile, VoIP can
work quite well on any of the three networks. Also no problem to use your
mobile as a modem in my experience. But that's coming from a pair gain
situation...
> Or is there comprehensive WLAN coverage down under?
I love the innocence of your question. :-))
Good luck,
Remy
