Fortunately for you, you are in Australia - to register a .com.au address
one has to have an ABN - or so I am led to believe - this makes it
difficult for people like me to "trademark" our names and keep domain names
safe for future use in Australia - e.g. I cannot register my domain names
as .com.au for use in the future as I don't yet have an ABN.

For what its worth I've generally gone for .com addresses where possible
while still heavily "branding" the site so people know it is in New
Zealand... personally I'd recommend using typo3.weballiance.com or similar...
