[TYPO3-workspace] Cannot get workspaces to work

Just installed a new typo3 v6.1website - with Fux/flui templates

I now want to use workspaces
https://www.digipen.edu/fileadmin/typo3_documentation/using_typo3_workspaces.pdf

The versioning icon is gone - I do not have and add or edit button in the 
workspace module - it is just blank

Do I have to configure something to enable it
