Hi,

an other solution would be a textfile like the one for wordpress.
http://api.wordpress.org/core/version-check/1.3/?locale=de_DE

Especially for automated test that would be usefull.
That way there could be a version check for the version of TYPO3 in the 
extensionmanager, or directly after login.
