We did some tests with Apache 2 and mod_proxy and the results were awesome.

We had TYPO3 on Apache 1.3 with PHP+eaccelerator and a Apache2 with
mod_proxy as reverse proxy (on a single machine)

Requesting Apache 1.3 directly was 55 requests per seconds
Requesting Apache 2 was >3000(!) requests per second.

The tests were based on a fully cached page with tt_news.
