To Juergen:
Yes bypear, but bypear only displays the categories that exists on
pear.php.net.

Problem now and also in the future with TER will be the endless list of
extensions inside the existing categories. And even if you only display
one category it will grow.

I like to request the idea to plan another/additional set of categories,
more specialised (admin,financial,...)

Having more selection criterias is a good way to start reduce the size
of the lists of extensions if you don't know the exact ext_code.

List of categories should be a fixed list and could be as one example a
list like the application categories for desktop software (gnome desktop
as one example) - application/devel application/network ...
