I see no problem: you can optimize those ;) As to the database space, look at cache_hash table. TV cache would not take 1% of a typical cache_hash on a site with many extensions.
I can confirm Daniel's findings. In my tests xml2array took a lot of time to process. I used XDebug for measurements. I do not have numbers because it was hald a year ago or so.
