[TYPO3-hci] Innovation?

Hi Kasper, hi list,

I know I might be a bit late with my suggestion, but I think it is
really an innovation so it should be the right point to tell you about...

First I want to introduce myself a little bit. My name is Andreas and
I'm studying computer science in Erlangen/Germany. Perhaps some people
know me from the other mailing lists or TYCON3 last year where I had the
possibility to participate as a "helping hand".

Why I tell you about that is also because the idea for my topic came
from a speech by Karsten at TYCON3. It's all about WebDAV. I think
WebDAV would be one really great usability advancement. With
filehandling in the first run. Of course it could be extended to handle
content, versioning and whatever too, but the first thing would be to
connect it with the fileadmin/DAM to handle easily the upload and
categorizing of files in the BE. This is in my opinion something that's
really anoying if you want to upload many files and don't have an ftp
account, or even if you have one, normaly the provider has to do some
tricky configuration to bring the ftp und php rights together. That is
something not given on every server. WebDAV should/will work everywhere.

As this are not all my ideas but mostly from Karsten, just read his
script on the TYCON3 page, there is a very detailed description of what
WebDAV is and how it could be integrated in TYPO3.

So, now I'm not alone with this for the moment. My collegue (also
student and perhaps known from the other mailinglists) Clemens, will be
with me on the train and we already got a php webDAV server running in a
test environment. So what we thought to do was: Implement a basic WebDAV
library that could be used by every extension to handle file-uploads. Of
course the core will need some changes to get this run in the fileadmin
and element Browser.

I know this feature was planned for version 5.0 but the basics would be
very nice to see earlier, as they are really usability improvements. I
don't know if Karsten has any news about this topic, as I don't have an
answer to my e-mail for now. Perhaps we can clarify this on the list.

So it would be great if you add this to the topics to do and Clemens and
I would be lucky to dig into this and try to provide a great WebDAV
library used by many extensions and the core.

Greets

Andreas
