I think it's easier if I provide you with some screenshots of what this

Basically the categories extension provides a central category table 
that may be used for categorizing any table in TYPO3. You can navigate 
the category tree the same way you do with the pages tree in the 
Web->List module. Only difference is of course that the same records may 
appear in multiple locations.

As mentioned somewhere else in this thread it's not yet publicly 
available. Please mail me if you would like a beta-version.

I'm not quite sure how we should / could work together on this. I have 
not yet have the time to look at your extension (I will within the next 
week). Just mail me with any idea or suggestions.
