Hi,

to contribute bigger changes or new functionality I think that could be
done in form of a temporary branch. To merge it into the trunk at some
point, would be the honour of the projects lead developer. 

Bugfixes of typical typos could be done in the trunk. In 99% of this
little cases the merge happens without any conflicts to solve upon update
or commit.
