tested the other adapters (jQuery, Prototype)?
Actually I haven't such problems, because I always start with empty
content and fill it with xaJax.
P.S.: I see this delay only under IE, not in FF.
P.P.S.: Perhaps you can look at "LoadMask"?

Oh yes, I see it, did you have looked at ext-all.css to find the
problematic settings? Perhaps then a bug-report can be send to the
developers.
